The Dallas Mavericks community relations team and Mavs Foundation had an upbeat celebration at Union Gospel Mission’s Center of Hope on Tuesday afternoon to unveil a brand new Ford van that will serve local families.

Union Gospel Mission (UGM Dallas) was a 2021-22 Mavs Foundation Grant Recipient, and their request was to receive a new van that will further their mission and the families they support.

Mavs Foundation president Katie Edwards handed over the keys as dozens of Union Gospel Mission volunteers, executives and families celebrated the new ride. Dallas Mavs entertainers were also on hand, including Champ, MavsMan, the ManiAACs and the D-Town crew.

UGM’s Center of Hope is a shelter and discipleship program where single women with children find encouragement and support in getting their families back on their feet. The faith-based facility provides a safe shelter for homeless and abused women and their children and provides showers and three meals a day.

The center has a library, a learning center, life skill classes, a chapel, and a medical clinic. The van will help shuttle the families to their appointments and other needs. Union Gospel Mission’s message: this is where hope begins.

“We have been anticipating this van all year,” said Bruce Butler, CEO at UGM Dallas. “It will make it easier for the women and children to get back and forth where needed. So thank you to the Mavs and the Mavs Foundation for your wonderful work throughout the community. We are transforming lives, ending homelessness one person at a time, and we show much love and hope for the children here.”

UGM’s Dallas Center of Hope can house up to 235 residents. The facility provides on-site, state-approved child development programs where children from birth through kindergarten are provided for in a safe and nurturing environment.

“We are so happy to provide this new van for y’all to travel all over town,” Edwards announced to the UGM families who attended the van-unveiling celebration. “We are so grateful for your work here and the critical support you provide for our community. We are just so happy to support everything you do. This is just a small gift to hopefully make life a little bit easier. Thank you for all you do and thank you to all the staff and volunteers for your continued commitment to the community.”

UGM Dallas shelters include the Center of Hope Women and Children’s shelter located at 4815 Cass Street and Calvert Place Men’s Shelter located at 3211 Irving Blvd., Dallas.
