Johnathan Landus Motley was born on May 4, 1995. A Houston native, the rookie has never had to leave the state of Texas to play basketball.
Motley starred at North Shore High School in Houston, leading his team to back-to-back district championships. He earned a nod as a top-100 recruit in the U.S. and committed to play college ball at Baylor. As a junior with the Bears, Motley led his team in scoring and earned Consensus second-team All-American honors as well as a spot on the All-Big 12 first team. He won the Karl Malone Award as the nation’s top power forward.
Motley suffered a knee injury in his final college game which unfortunately caused him to go undrafted in 2017. However, the Mavericks contacted him immediately after the draft and they quickly agreed to terms on a two-way contract, meaning he can spend 45 days this season with the Mavs and will spend the rest of his time with the Texas Legends, the Mavs’ G League affiliate. Motley made his name as a pro early on, hitting the game-winning shot in the Orlando Summer League championship game and knocking down another game-winner in Dallas’s preseason opener.
