Dorian Finney-Smith was the first player off the Las Vegas Summer League squad to earn a contract with the Mavericks, and while he’ll still have to fight for a spot on the final 15-man roster, the team’s eagerness to sign him says a lot about what the organization believes he can achieve as a player. Finney-Smith is a prototypical “3-and-D” type of player, and his defensive versatility is perhaps his greatest asset. He has a 7-foot wingspan and can defend quick players on the outside and long players on the inside. His best spot right away might be as a small-ball power forward, though he can slide down to small forward if necessary – he shot 42.6 percent from deep as a junior at Florida, so he has the stroke. He plays with an energy and sense of urgency which should inspire those around him to do just the same.
