DALLAS MAVERICKS MOMENTS MIXTAPE:

  • TRACK 1 – Moody MadnessApril 26, 1984 – The Mavericks won their first-ever playoff series in a home game, but not at Reunion Arena. Game 5 of the 1984 first round was instead played at SMU’s Moody Coliseum, as Reunion was hosting a tennis tournament. The young Mavs weren’t expected to make much noise that season, but Dallas wasted no time achieving playoff success, knocking off the more experienced Sonics in the franchise’s postseason debut. Many have claimed they were in the building, but officially, only 9,007 fans squeezed into Moody that wild night to witness history.
  • TRACK 2 – 2001 Mavs win first round playoff vs. Utah JazzMay 3, 2001 – With the game and the series on the line and the seconds winding down, who would take the Mavs’ final shot? It wouldn’t be All-NBA forward Dirk Nowitzki. Nor would it be All-Star guard Michael Finley. No, as a Jazz double-team flew at Finley to save their season, Finley dropped off a pass to the most unexpected recipient: Calvin Booth, whose sixth field goal of the entire series put the Mavs in front 84-83 with nine seconds to go. Dallas would win the game and advance to the next round – its first playoff series win since 1988.
  • TRACK 3 – 2011 Mavs win Western Conference Final vs. Oklahoma City Thunder May 25, 2011 – It had to be Dirk. As the Mavs looked to complete yet another fourth-quarter comeback and close out the Thunder at home in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals, Dallas needed someone to hit a big shot, to deliver the final blow. Down 94-92 with a minute-and-a-half to go, Nowitzki missed one go-ahead 3-pointer, but the Mavs would win the loose-ball scramble and the ball would find Dirk again in his favorite spot, right at the top of the arc. He wouldn’t miss twice. Bucket, Mavs lead 95-94. The rest is history. Dallas would win the game, the series, and eventually the championship.
  • TRACK 4 – 2011 Championship win over the Miami Heat June 12, 2011 – Dirk Nowitzki’s 2011 playoff run is one of the greatest playoff performances of all-time. But you can’t scale the NBA mountain and plant your flag alone. Every Maverick made plays as the team closed out Game 6 in Miami. Jason Terry. Jason Kidd. Tyson Chandler. Shawn Marion. DeShawn Stevenson. J.J. Barea. Ian Mahinmi. Brian Cardinal. It was only fitting that the entire team contributed to the greatest win in franchise history, a testament both to individual excellence and to team basketball in its purest form.
  • TRACK 5 – 2017 Dirk scores 30kMarch 7, 2017 – Nearly 20,000 fans in identical “30K” shirts stood every time Dirk Nowitzki touched the ball on March 7, 2017. He was 20 points shy of 30,000 for his career. On a good night it might take all four quarters to get there. But Dirk didn’t keep Dallas fans waiting for long. The 38-year-old poured in 18 points in the first quarter on just eight shots, and less than two minutes into the second he knocked down a patented baseline jumper to reach the milestone. The crowd erupted in applause, tears, and joy. The gangly kid from Würzburg, who once doubted he was good enough to stick around in the NBA, had made history.
  • TRACK 6 – 2019 Dirk’s Retirement/Passing the Torch to LukaApril 9, 2019 – There was perhaps no better symbolic passing of the torch from Dirk Nowitzki to his heir than during the Mavs legend’s final home game. Dirk scored 30 points that night, while 20-year-old Luka Dončić recorded a 21-point triple-double. Nearly 20,000 fans paid tribute to Nowitzki’s brilliant career while also watching the final game of Dončić’s historic Rookie of the Year campaign. One man’s first season ended as another’s 21st came to a close, as one era flowed beautifully into the next. Dallas is now Dončić’s city, but without Dirk there would be no Luka.
