Being quarantined for 48 hours at a hotel in Orlando didn’t stop the Dallas Mavericks from getting their groove on.

Not long after they arrived in Orlando on Wednesday, several players were on their individual balcony and jamming to the beat of several songs. Forward/center Dwight Powell spearheaded the “event,” forward/center Maxi Kleber served as the disc jockey, and J. J. Barea, Luka Doncic and Dorian Finney-Smith were bobbing and weaving to the music and smiling along the way.

The Mavs pieced together a video of their musical experience, and it made its way to Instagram and onto several TV stations.

“Dwight actually came up with that idea and wanted to do that video and he did a great job of editing, too,” Kleber said following Friday’s practice. “It actually took quite a while (to complete) because we had to get all the footage, and then out of nowhere, J.J., who was on the balcony, he was filming us while we did it and was laughing at us.

“So we said, ‘Hey J.J., can you actually stay there?’ All of a sudden Doe-Doe (Finney-Smith) and Luka stepped out (onto their balcony), and then we just took  another shot.”

It appeared that a good time was had by all. Guard Seth Curry, however, missed out on the fun.

“I didn’t make it outside,” Curry said. “I saw it on Instagram, but I must have been sleeping when they were doing their thing.”

In the Mavs’ first of what will be many nights in Orlando, the music video was a bonding experience for the players.

“The editing was the main part, because we had to put the music together so that the drum of the beat was perfect,” Kleber said. “Dwight did all that, and he did a great job on that.

“But it was fun. We did it for two hours, just hanging out there and trying to figure out what we wanted to do. We had a fun time.”

And having fun is a big part of the equation while in a hotel for about two-to-three months.

“Our guys have had a really terrific approach and attitude about coming here knowing that there’s going to be limitations and stuff like that, and knowing that at the end of the day we just have each other,” coach Rick Carlisle said. “They’re putting out some really cool stuff on social media and having fun with that.

“We’re allowing our social media guy, Chopper (Mavs videographer Jason Chinnock), to really have almost unlimited access to our practice and meetings. We’re going to give a lot of content to Instagram, Twitter, all those things, so that our fans can get as close a view as possible of this historic situation.”

And the backdrop of this historic situation is filled with music by the Mavs, who proved that being quarantined is not so bad.
