Mavs proprietor Mark Cuban said yesterday the Mavs’ new practice facility could open as soon as the end of this month. More specifically, the Mavericks have targeted Media Day, Sept. 26, as the goal for the new complex’s completion date. Mavs training camp begins that same week.

During the 2016 playoffs Cuban alluded to the possibility that the facility could open in 2016, and now it appears that goal could indeed become a reality.

Cuban told Mavs.com the team “got lucky,” in that the pre-existing building’s vast space and sturdy foundation provided the opportunity to get right to work and lay down as many courts as the team needed. That helped to expedite construction.

“We didn’t need to make a lot of structural changes,” Cuban said. “We just needed to clean it up and add our specifics.”

Cuban said the most important elements of the new facility are, of course, the practice courts. Without those, nothing else matters. The new building will have two, an increase from the lone court used in the basement of American Airlines Center. It will also include state-of-the-art biotechnology and medical facilities designed to enhance the players’ health, maintenance, and game preparation, in addition to a locker room, weight room, and more.

The photos above, taken from Cuban’s Twitter account, might not do justice to how close the project is to being done. The reality is the walls and rooms are already in place. Essentially all that’s left is laying down the hardwood, he said. The finish line is clearly in sight.

Eventually, the Mavs’ basketball operations staff will relocate to the new facility as well, and that could also happen as soon as the end of September. Currently squeezed into AAC offices adjacent to the Mavs’ locker room, the new offices will offer not only more space, but also more advanced technology to make their jobs easier. The existing offices will remain at least mostly intact and will be used on game nights.

The new facility is located just across I-35 from American Airlines Center.
