The Mavericks have selected point guard Dennis Smith Jr. with the ninth overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft.

Smith, a freshman from NC State, compiled season averages of 18.1 points, 6.2 assists, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.9 steals per game, shooting 45.5 percent from the field and 35.9 percent from beyond the arc. He led the ACC in assists per game, assist percentage, and points produced per game. He finished second in the conference in steals per game.

The 6-foot-3 guard is an explosive athlete with an extraordinary vertical leap, reportedly measured at 48 inches during a pre-draft workout with the Los Angeles Lakers. He projects as a player who could thrive in a pick-and-roll-heavy NBA offense, which makes him an intriguing fit for this roster right away.
