DALLAS – The Dallas Mavericks announced today that they have re-signed guard Jose Juan Barea. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Barea (6-0, 185) holds career averages of 9.0 points, 3.9 assists and 19.7 minutes in 802 games (101 starts) with Dallas and Minnesota and helped lead the Mavericks to their first World Championship in franchise history in 2011.

In 2017-18, Barea played some of the best basketball of his career, averaging a career high in both points (11.6 ppg) and assists (6.3 apg). His 2018-19 season was cut short when he suffered a rupture of his right Achilles tendon on Jan. 11 at Minnesota. At the time of the injury, Barea was averaging 10.9 points and 5.6 assists per game.

The 13-year veteran point guard is also known for his philanthropic work in North Texas and his native Puerto Rico. At the conclusion of the 2017-18 season, Barea was honored by the Pro Basketball Writers Association with the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award. The honor is given annually to the player, coach or staff member who shows outstanding service and dedication to the community.

The Mayaguez, Puerto Rico native went undrafted in the 2006 NBA Draft and was signed by Dallas as a rookie free agent on August 17, 2006. Barea attended Northeastern University where, as a senior, he averaged 21.0 points, 8.4 assists and 4.4 rebounds for the Huskies.
