The evidence about Luka Dončić rise to the top of the NBA keeps pouring in.
The latest proof that his superstar status continues to grow comes from the latest release of jersey sales.
Dončić’s jersey is No. 2 in sales from late July to Monday, essentially the entire time that the NBA played in the bubble. He is ahead of everybody but LeBron James.
Ahead of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Anthony Davis. Ahead of Kevin Durant and Steph Curry. And ahead of Damian Lillard and Kawhi Leonard.
It obviously was the highest ranking of his career for Dončić.
Among the contributing factors to his rise is his presence on social media. It doesn’t take coach Rick Carlisle long to rattle off how many followers Dončić has on Instagram. It’s 3 million and counting. He added nearly 700,000 followers since the NBA restart in July, fourth most in the NBA.
On Twitter, he’s closing in on 1.1 million followers.
He thinks of himself as more than just a basketball player.
“That’s what I do,” he said. “I like to enjoy the game. I like to be an entertainer.”
The bottom line is that superstars drive the league and the fan appeal. And the Mavericks are fortunate to have one of the best players on the planet.
In addition to Luka’s popularity, the Mavericks ranked seventh on the team merchandise list for the time in the bubble. Only the Lakers, Celtics, Bulls, Heat, Warriors and Raptors were ahead of them.
