About the Mavs: After the game, originally scheduled for Thursday, was postponed, the NBA players decided to resume the playoffs and now the game will be played with a few extra days of rest between Games 5 and 6 . . . One thing hasn’t changed: it’s win-or-go-home time for the Mavericks, times two. The Mavericks must win Game 6 or the series is over. If they force a Game 7, they’ll do it all over again . . . The big issue is how they will handle the loss of Kristaps Porzingis. The 7-3 center has officially been ruled out of the rest of the series with a torn lateral meniscus in his right knee. He missed Games 3 and 4 with what was termed right knee soreness. The Mavericks went 1-1 in those games, so clearly they can survive without Porzingis. But the way they lost Game 5 had to leave a scar. The 154-111 hammering was never in doubt after a 19-0 first-quarter blitz by the Clippers. Porzingis averaged 23.7 points in the playoff games in which he’s appeared . . . The oddsmakers aren’t buying into the Mavericks’ chances, having installed the Clippers as huge 9½-point favorites to close out the series . . . One of the best surprises of the seeding games and the playoffs has been Trey Burke. The 6-foot guard has averaged 13.6 points in the five playoff games, starting the last two in place of Porzingis. The down side to starting Burke is that it significantly limits their rebounding, an area in which they were pounded in the Game 5 blowout loss . . . Luka Dončić has been nothing short of sensational in the playoffs, averaging 29.6 points, 10 rebounds and 8.6 assists. Like just about all the Mavericks, he had an off night in Game 5, but just like the team as a whole, Dončić has not had many times this season when he’s had two subpar games in a row . . . The Mavericks are dead last among the 16 playoff teams in scoring defense, allowing the Clippers to score an average of 129.8 points per game.

About the Clippers: They, along with their crosstown rival Lakers, reportedly voted to suspend or cancel the rest of the NBA postseason so that players could concentrate on making their voices heard in the fight for social justice. The three playoff games on Wednesday and Thursday were postponed. The teams elected on Thursday to continue playing, but coach Doc Rivers said that it was “not a layup” that the decision would go that direction . . . The Clippers finally looked like the dominant No. 2 seed in this series in which they were heavily favored. But they have not been able to do it two games in a row. The teams have alternated victories through the first five games . . . . Shooting has been dynamite for the Clippers, particularly in the last three games. They are hitting 40.6 percent from 3-point range for the series, but have made a whopping 46.7 percent in the last three . . . Paul George had a rough stretch, averaging just 11 points in Games 2,3 and 4. He said: “I was in a bad place,” with regard to his slump-ridden games. Indeed, it has become apparent that many players are feeling the stress of having been in the bubble for more than six weeks and with another six weeks ahead of teams that make it to the NBA finals, which the Clippers believe they have a chance to do. George snapped out of it in Game 5 with 35 points in just 25 minutes on the court during the blowout win . . . Patrick Beverley has been sidelined since Game 1 with a strained calf muscle. The Clippers are hoping he can return soon, but it was unclear whether he would be able to return before the end of this series.
