Highlights: Mavs vs. Hornets – 11/17/14

Monta Ellis scores 18 points, Chandler Parsons adds 17 points and nine rebounds as the Mavericks defeat the Hornets.

CHARLOTTE — Sprinting to three straight wins to end their four-game homestand, the Dallas Mavericks quickly faced yet another daunting matchup Monday night in Charlotte.

Beginning a tough two-game road trip that concludes Wednesday night against the Washington Wizards, the Mavericks looked to continue streaking in the right direction. In their way, however, stood a Hornets team hungry to get back on track following a 112-87 defeat at Golden State on Saturday.

Still, the Mavs went in search of their fourth straight win, looking to hand the Hornets just their second loss at home of the young season. And after another career milestone by 12-time All-Star Dirk Nowitzki highlighted a dominant performance, the Mavericks (8-3) stretched their winning streak out to four while sprinting to a runaway 107-80 victory.

“We’re a tough team,” Nowitzki said of the dominant win. “I mean, we still have a long way to go this season, but we like where we’re headed. Obviously, we’ve got to get better as the competition gets better, but this was a good road win for us.”

Beginning his four-game suspension handed out by the NBA this summer, veteran guard Raymond Felton was activated for the first time after battling back from a right high ankle sprain suffered in the preseason. Meanwhile, as he looked to pick up where he left off at following his season-high 30 points on 11-of-21 shooting in Saturday’s 131-117 win over Minnesota, starting shooting guard Monta Ellis would get the Mavs off to a quick start by connecting on his first three shot attempts.

Stellar ball movement then led to a three-pointer by new addition Chandler Parsons, lifting the Mavs to a 14-7 lead in the process. Parsons would stay on the attack from there, swishing a trey and completing the four-point play after a foul on Hornets swingman P.J. Hairston to put the visiting Mavericks up 27-17. And with Parsons and Ellis scoring nine points apiece in the opening quarter on a combined 7-of-10 shooting, the Mavericks surged into the second stanza with a 32-24 advantage.

Led by Nowitzki and newcomer Al-Farouq Aminu, the Mavericks continued to separate themselves on the scoreboard with a 10-2 run early in the second period. Center Tyson Chandler’s aerial display then proceeded to keep the Hornets at a safe distance, making his presence known with multiple above-the-rim finishes.

Point guard Jameer Nelson’s alley-oop connection with backup big man Brandan Wright then lifted the Mavs to a 24-point lead, 67-43, entering the halftime intermission.

Led by Ellis’ 13 first-half points on 5-of-9 shooting, the Mavericks as a team connected on 61.9 percent from the field through two quarters, bettering the Hornets’ 42.5 percent at the other end of the floor. The Mavs also assisted on 21 of their 26 first-half field goals, holding a 24-15 rebounding edge to boot at the midway mark.

“We were moving it well and we were scrambling pretty well defensively,” Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said of his team’s play in the first half. “We had some key stops earlier in the game where guys got in the lane. Ellis made really a couple of great defensive stands one on one early, and he took a sure two for them and turned it into a two or a three for us. And, you know, we built momentum early and we sustained, which is really important. I mean, when you’re trying to be a championship-caliber team, you’ve got to be able to build leads and sustain effort and sustain them. We did a good job of it tonight.”

With reserve guard Devin Harris ruled out the rest of the way due to lower-leg soreness on his right side, the Mavs would have to finish the night minus one of their top contributors. Sensing his team needed a boost, Nowitzki then intervened, connecting on back-to-back jumpers to give him 27,000 points for his career, joining Karl Malone, Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan as one of four players in NBA history to reach the feat with one team.

“Well, it means a lot to me that I was able to do it for one franchise. With not knowing what to expect when I first got there a long time ago, it’s been a great ride,” Nowitzki said of the accolade. “The people were great to me from the beginning and I struggled the first year, but they really supported me. And then obviously [Mavs owner Mark Cuban] bought the team and he was loyal to me, so it was kind of a new home. So, I’m proud of that, and hopefully there’s many more baskets to come.”

Ellis then reassumed the scoring responsibilities as the lead surged to as many as 30, taking the Mavs into the fourth with an 88-61 margin under their belt.

With the final verdict never really in doubt in the fourth, Carlisle rested his veterans the remainder of the game. Aminu then delivered a knockout blow, slamming down a transition score with authority to put the Mavs up 92-63.

Reserve guard J.J. Barea did the rest, closing the Hornets (4-7) out with scores down the stretch as the lead peaked at 33.

Leading the Mavs in scoring for the second straight game as all five Dallas starters reached double figures, Ellis finished with 18 points on 7-of-17 shooting. Parsons added 17 points on 5-of-10 from the field, snatching down nine rebounds and dishing out six assists while filling up the stat sheet. Scoring 14 points and grabbing down nine rebounds, Chandler finished just shy of his sixth double-double in the last eight games. Meanwhile, Nowitzki scored 13 points and grabbed down five rebounds while reaching another career milestone. Nelson pitched in 11 points and dished out eight assists. Wright also registered 10 points off the Mavs’ bench.

“That’s how we need to play basketball,” Wright said. “We’ve got to move the ball, have a lot of different guys touching it and everyone has to do their job.”

“Look, we’ve got to have balance. It all can’t come from one guy,” Carlisle added. “We can’t put the whole game on Dirk’s shoulders or Monta’s shoulders or anything like that. The ball has got to move, so we did a lot of good things. Now, we’re in a position where we’ve got to keep momentum and we’ve got to sustain a good effort, like tonight.”

Gerald Henderson led the Hornets with 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting, adding five rebounds. But the Mavericks’ 51.2 percent shooting bettered the Hornets’ 40 percent at the other end, adding a 50-35 rebounding edge and 20 points off Charlotte’s 13 turnovers while committing just eight giveaways of their own.

“Well, that’s a tired team. I mean, they’re coming off a back-to-back on the West Coast, they get done playing at 11:30 Pacific time Saturday night and they’ve got to fly out. And I don’t know if they flew back that night or the next day, but that’s a hard turnaround, coming back east and losing three hours. So, you know, we caught a break there,” Carlisle concluded. “And they’ve got a couple of guys out who are key players. You know, [Gary] Neal being out, that’s a big loss. [Michael] Kidd-Gilchrist is one of their starters, so we caught a break there. So, look, it’s going to go the other way some nights for us, so we’ve got to be ready for that. But in this league you take the wins when you can get them and run and move on to the next one.”

Note: Concluding their two-game road trip Wednesday night in national’s capital, the Mavericks will next take on the Washington Wizards. The game will air locally on Fox Sports Southwest at 6 p.m. CT.

Following their two-game road trip, the Mavericks will return to American Airlines Center on Friday, hosting Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers. That game will air locally on Fox Sports Southwest at 7:30 p.m. CT. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling (214) 747-MAVS (6287) or by visiting

Mavericks vs. Hornets: First half

Monta Ellis has 13 points, Dirk Nowitzki and Chandler Parsons each have 12 points as the Mavericks lead the Hornets 67-43 at the half.

CHARLOTTE — While his team attempts to seize a fourth straight win without him, it will be a bittersweet experience for Dallas Mavericks guard Raymond Felton as he begins a four-game suspension handed out by the NBA this summer.

Battling his way back from a high right ankle sprain suffered this preseason, Felton is expected to be activated by the Mavericks (7-3) for the first time Monday night. However, after being handed a four-game suspension by the league for pleading guilty to attempted criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a firearm while in New York prior to being dealt to Dallas on the eve of June’s draft, Felton will be forced to be away from Time Warner Cable Arena as the Mavs begin a two-game road trip without his services.

That makes Monday night’s return to Charlotte one Felton would rather forget, according to the former North Carolina standout and native of Marion, S.C., as he misses his only opportunity to play in front of friends and family this regular season.

“It’s a little bittersweet thing,” Felton explained. “I mean, it feels good to start [the suspension], but then it’s also like one of those things where I only get to play here once and this is basically home. You know, it would have been great to play in front of family and those that can’t come to Dallas to see me, like my mom and others who only can come to Charlotte to see me play. But, you know, it’s something that I’ve just got to do.”

Entering the league as the fifth overall pick in the 2005 draft, Felton spent his first five seasons in the league with the Charlotte franchise. But, while Felton watches the game from afar with his family and close friends, he’ll be rooting for the Mavs to continue trending in the upward direction with a win Monday night.

In order notch a fourth consecutive victory, however, Mavs coach Rick Carlisle says that his team will have to meet and exceed Charlotte’s level physicality. That might be easier said than done, Carlisle confesses, as the Mavs face a 4-6 Hornets team that’s won three out of four at home.

“They’re very physical,” Carlisle said with a great amount of respect for the Hornets. “They’re a great rebounding team. They’re plus-15 rebounds per game in their wins, and so they pose a lot of physical challenges.

“We’ve had a favorable schedule to this point, but these games are going to be harder games. They’re road games, they’re against physical playoff teams from the East, and so this is a different form of a challenge.”

Note: Beginning a two-game road trip Monday night in Charlotte, the Mavericks will next take on the Hornets. The game will air locally on Fox Sports Southwest at 6 p.m. CT.

Following their two-game road trip, the Mavericks will return to American Airlines Center on Friday, hosting Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers. Injury updates presented by Baylor Emergency Medical Centers:
-Raymond Felton, high right ankle sprain, expected to be activated

CHARLOTTE — After beginning their four-game homestand with a disappointing display against the Miami Heat, the Dallas Mavericks sprinted to three straight wins at American Airlines Center.

Falling to a 105-96 defeat against the Heat to open their four-game stretch at home Nov. 9, the Mavericks (7-3) would regain their stride with wins against Sacramento, Philadelphia and Minnesota. Now, the Mavs hope to continue surging up the Western Conference standings as they begin a two-game road trip, taking on two projected Eastern Conference playoff teams in the Charlotte Hornets and the Washington Wizards, respectively.

“It was exactly what we wanted to do at the end of this homestand,” 12-time All-Star Dirk Nowitzki said after Saturday’s 131-117 victory against Minnesota in which eight different Mavs scored in double figures. “We started off rough with the loss against Miami, but we took care of our business after that and protected the home court before we’re going to hit the road again for some tough games.”

“It will be huge,” new addition Chandler Parsons added. “Charlotte and Washington are two of the better teams in the East, and going into any opponent’s arena is not easy. So, this will be a big test for us to see where we stand.”

Coming off a season-high scoring output as a team against the Timberwolves led by starting shooting guard Monta Ellis’ 30 points on 11-of-21 shooting, however, the Mavs will now face a Hornets team that figures to be much-improved following the offseason addition of swingman Lance Stephenson from Indiana.

Getting off to an up-and-down start, the Hornets (4-6) will try to rebound from a 112-87 defeat at Golden State on Saturday. In order to do so, the young Charlotte squad will try to get its crowd involved in the game, entering Monday night with a 3-1 mark at Time Warner Cable Arena and allowing just 96.3 points per game at home.

For that reason, Mavs coach Rick Carlisle says his team will have to come prepared for a dogfight, looking to claim a fourth consecutive win overall and move to 3-2 on the road in a hostile environment.

“These two games coming up are different games than we’ve had in the last couple. We’re getting into two really physical Eastern Conference teams. They’re going to be games more similar to Sacramento,” Carlisle explained after his team had to rally from 24 points down for a 106-98 win last Tuesday night to take down the Kings.

He added: “It’s a physical game, it’s a meat-grinder game, and so we’ve got to be prepared with a strong disposition.”

Vs. Hornets
