OUR PLEDGE

The Dallas Mavericks pledge to listen, learn and unite our DFW communities to address racial inequities and disparities, promote social justice, and drive sustainable change. We pledge a minimum $5M investment and 10,000 employee volunteer hours over the next 3 years in Mavs Take ACTION!

The Dallas Mavericks are partnering with others and taking action to address systemic racial disparities and inequities in our communities.

ADVOCACY

  • Voter Registration & Civic Participation: Launch PSA, feet on the street, know before you vote campaign. Declare November 3, 2020, Every Voice Matters Day. Be an active voice in amplifying justice, opportunity and equality in public policy and community efforts.
  • Paid Employee Holidays: Provide time off for Mavs employees to serve the community on MLK day, Juneteenth and national Election Day. Commit funding for social justice grants related to each community service paid holiday.
  • 2020 Census Project: Launch PSA campaign to call on every citizen to be counted.

  • Courageous Conversations: Provide safe spaces for dialogue, understanding and action plan monitoring to strengthen workplace and communities.
  • Listening Tour: Build relationships with community leaders and organizations to listen and learn about issues and needs.

  • Mavs Leadership Representation: Establish training, mentoring and sponsorship program to accelerate the development and advancement of Mavs POC employees.

INVESTMENT

EDUCATION INVESTMENT

  • Adopt-A-School: Launch a multi-year commitment to provide financial support and walk alongside elementary school students, families and teachers as tutors, mentors and technology resources.
  • Operation Connectivity: Partner with the Dallas Independent School District to bridge the digital divide for South Dallas students.
  • College Scholarships: Provide “full ride” scholarships, summer internships and support for HBCU students, including an annual contribution to the United Negro College Fund (UNCF).
  • HBCU College to Career: Develop a pipeline of talent through establishing a Sports Management major and support of Corporate Work Program at Paul Quinn College.

EMPLOYMENT AND ECONOMIC INVESTMENT

  • Business Development: Provide financial and other resources to the Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce, Dallas Regional Chamber’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives and other programs to support Black-owned businesses.
  • Supplier Diversity: Double procurement spending with Black- and Minority-owned businesses.
  • Mavs Permanent Hiring: Commit to increase Black representation for college permanent hires.
  • Mavs Apprentice Program: Provide unique work experiences for black youth to learn about the business of basketball.

COMMUNITY INVESTMENT

  • Project Unity: Commit financial support and employee volunteer hours to Project Unity’s Community building initiatives – Together We Can, Together We Learn, Together We Dine and Together We Ball.
  • Personal Protective Equipment: Provide PPE for nonprofit organizations, peaceful protestors and testing sites in underserved communities to address the disproportional impacts of COVID-19.
  • Youth Education Programs: Commit financial support and Mavs Academy trainings for STEAM summer camps and youth development programs to build strong children.
  • Foster Care Youth: Align with strategic community partners to assist youth in navigating and overcoming challenges in facing child welfare and justice systems.
  • Reentry from Prison: Partner with reentry programs and organizations to support men and women returning to society after incarceration.

OUTREACH

  • Building Bridges through Basketball: Sponsor Basketball camps, clinics and dialogue with Mavs players, youth, community leaders and police officers to foster unity and build relationships between communities and law enforcement.
  • NBA “Team Up for Change”: Partner with other NBA/WNBA teams to address social injustice and community challenges through exploring the intersection of sports, race and the pursuit of more equitable communities.
  • Policing Policies: Partner with police reform organizations, DPD and others to impact change.

  • External Advisory Board: Increase the presence of Social Justice leaders on the Dallas Mavericks Advisory Council (DMAC).
