DALLAS — Dallas Mavericks center/forward Dwight Powell has won the NBA Cares Community Assist Award for the month of October, the league announced today.

The award goes to a player each month during the season who best reflects the passion the NBA and its players share for giving back to their community. Powell will receive the award prior to Saturday night’s game at American Airlines Center between the Mavs and Boston Celtics.

Also, Kaiser Permanente and the NBA will donate $10,000 to Champions of Discovery on behalf of Powell.

“Much of what I’ve learned from Mark Cuban, Coach Carlisle and Dirk Nowitzki throughout the years has been about how important it is to help this community, which has given us such incredible support,” Powell said. “I’m proud to say I’m a Maverick for that reason most of all.”

Last month Powell hosted A Night Of Hope, a fund-raising event where cancer survivors could come and mingle and share their stories. Through an online auction, the event raised over $600,000 for cancer survivors and their families.

“It’s important to him what he does in the community,” Mavs proprietor Mark Cuban said. “He started a charity that’s geared towards taking care of families who has cancer and giving them things they need. That just says who he is.”
