Sibling rivalry is real. Older siblings weave rich tales of wedgies and swirlies, while younger siblings have the scars to validate each battle story. For the Casey brothers, their sibling rivalry extends onto the basketball court.

Older brother Billy is Spurs fan, while younger brother Phillip is a Mavericks fan. For years, the Casey brothers have made it a tradition to watch every Mavs-Spurs game together. The siblings usually make their way to local sports bars or house parties to enjoy the games and engage in a little brotherly trash talk. Finally, on December 26, 2013, Billy and Phillip took their rivalry to the next level and went to a Mavs-Spurs game at the AAC.

The tides have turned several times over the years, as the Mavs and Spurs have each had their share of glory. On this night, Billy would exit the arena victorious, but you certainly couldn’t tell by the smile on Phillip’s face after having experienced the Mavs-Spurs rivalry in person.

What made the game even more special was the memory of their friend, Ryan, who passed suddenly at Christmas time seven years ago. Ryan was a devoted Mavericks fan, and his unexpected death inspired the Casey brothers to continue enjoying basketball together, and to live life to the fullest.

Making the time to attend the Mavs-Spurs game together on the night after Christmas was a great tribute to Ryan’s memory, and it enabled the siblings to temporarily put their rivalry aside and enjoy the moment.
