Shawn Marion (born May 7, 1978 in Chicago, Illinois) was obtained by the Dallas Mavericks in a 3-team trade, which also included Kris Humphries and Nathan Jawai on July 9, 2009.
Marion attended Vincennes University, a junior college in Indiana, his first two years where he was named a first team Junior College All-American. Transferring to UNLV for his junior season, he led the team in scoring and rebounding while being named to the WAC Mountain Division first team, the WAC All-Newcomer team and the league’s All-Defensive team.
Selected by the Phoenix Suns in the first round of the 1999 NBA draft, Marion was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team after averaging 10.2 points per game. His numbers rose his second season to 17.3 ppg and 10.7 rebounds per game.
In 2004, the 6’7 forward was part of the United States Bronze Medal-winning Olympic team. Also in 2003-2004 he led the NBA in steals with 167 on the season.
During the 2005-2006 campaign, Marion was named third team All-NBA for the second consecutive season. He also posted a career-high 60 double/doubles in 81 starts and his career high-point game came that season when he scored 44 against Boston on February 22, 2006. That same season, his Phoenix Suns advanced to the Western Conference Finals before losing to Dallas in an exciting six game series, despite his 20.4 ppg average.
Marion led Phoenix to the playoffs six times during his eight full seasons with the Suns. He was also named an to the NBA Western Conference All-Star team four times scoring 8,10,14 and 18 points respectively.
During the 2007-2008 season, Marion was traded, along with Marcus Banks, to the Miami Heat for Shaquille O’Neal. He began the next season with the Heat but was traded, again with Marcus Banks, to Toronto for Jermaine O’Neal, Jamario Moon and a future conditional draft choice. With the Raptors, he averaged 14.3 points for the remainder of the season.
In July of 2009, the Mavericks acquired Marion, Kris Humphries, Nathan Jawai and cash considerations from the Raptors for Antoine Wright and Devean George in a deal that also sent Greg Buckner to Dallas from Memphis in exchange for Jerry Stackhouse and cash considerations…a second round pick and cash considerations from Toronto to Memphis… and Hedu Turkoglu from Orlando to Toronto for cash considerations from Dallas and Toronto.

Marion also established the Shawn Marion Foundation in 2007, whose mission is to assist single mothers through vocational training and adult scholarships and to aid disadvantaged children through educational programs that prepare them with critical skills needed to be successful in life.
